Give Peas a Chance: How Citizen Scientists Helped Solve the Photon Crisis
This talk will be about ‘Green Pea Galaxies’ – a type of galaxy discovered by citizen scientists on ‘GalaxyZoo’—that helped us understand the evolution of the intergalactic medium and resolved an open question of cosmic-scale significance.
OUR PRESENTER:
Dr. O’Sullivan received his PhD in astrophysics from Caltech in 2020, where he studied how intergalactic gas fuels the growth and evolution of galaxies across cosmic time — logging over 100 nights of observations at the Keck and Palomar Observatories along the way. He has since worked as a Data Scientist at Google Search, as a Research Scientist at the University of Colorado Boulder / LASP, and currently works in advanced concepts development at Blue Origin. Originally from Ireland, he lives in Boulder with his wife, 1-year-old daughter, and two cats.”
